Machine Shops: What Sorts of Machine Tools Exist?
What types of machines tools are out there today? How do they shape or form metal into parts?
As we've noted a machine tool is a machine that shapes or machines metal. It does this by cutting, grinding, boring, shearing or some other form of deformation of the metal.
There are two main ideas behind a machine tool that all have: a) some way of holding or constraining the metal, restricting it's movement b) have some way of guiding the movement of the parts of the machine. So the metal gets held in place while the machine moves around it to deform it into the desired part.
This relative movement betwen the metal (or workpiece) and machine (or cutting tool) is called the toolpath. The toolpath may also be defined as the "series of coordinate positions that determine the movement of a tool during a machining operation". ALL machine tools are controlled at least to some extent rather than the operator simply being able to freehand the metal.
Early machine tools had complex systems of gears and levers that humans used to operate them with flywheels to stabilize their motion. After Word War II, NC machines were created. These used punch cards or paper tape with punched holes in it to control the actions of the machines. These are known as Numeric Control machines (NC machines). Fast forward to the 1960s and computer control of machines started (CNC Machines or Computer Numerical Control machines). CNC machines as well as their predecessor NC machines could much more precisely repeat the same sequence again and again. Also, they could create more complex parts. Nowadays engineers can quickly program a CNC machine to do very specific tasks.
There are all sorts of CNC machines for different applications. Some of these are as follow:
Jig Bores, Mills, Lathes, Radial Drills, Drill Presses, Honing Machines, Saws, Broaching Machines, Gear Shapers, Hones, Screw Machines, Shear, Shapr, Planer, Hobbing Machine, Stewart Platform Mills, Grinding Machines, and more!
